Signs your home is under-insulated for the climate in Southwestern Ontario.

As a homeowner do you give much thought to what is behind your walls and in your attic keeping your home warm with our changing client in Southwestern, Ontario. Besides keeping your home warm in the winter insulation can prevent mold growth and keep unwanted noise out.

Insulation is an essential part of your home that is often neglected. However, if your home lacks the proper amount of insulation, or if your insulation is installed incorrectly, you can do severe damage to both your home and your bank account.

Here are four ways you can tell if your home is under-insulated:

1. FLUCTUATING TEMPERATURES
One sign of improper insulation is having even temperatures throughout your home. If different rooms have different temperatures – say, you freeze in the kitchen but feel too warm in your living room – that is a clear sign your house is under-insulated or has uneven insulation.

2. RISING ENERGY BILLS
You may not notice extreme temperature shifts in your home if your heating units are working overtime, but you will notice your radically high energy bill. If wasted heat is escaping through your roof, it is time to replace your insulation in your attic or do an attic top-up.

3. LEAKS IN THE ATTIC
Just as poor insulation lets heat out of your home, it also tends to let moisture in. Water has a much easier time finding its way into poorly-insulated dwellings than a well-insulated one. If the insulation becomes moist, damp, or sopping wet, there is no salvaging the material. If you are experiencing a leaky attic, your insulation may be part of the problem. If you are unsure if your attic needs to be reinsulated have one our Insulation Specialist give you consultation.

4. MOLD APPEARING IN THE BASEMENT
High humidity plus the often cold temperatures in the basement usually produces condensation. Condensation collects on cold metal pipes, cold concrete basement floors (even if there is carpet over the top) and on walls and eventually creates mold.

Even if you live in an older home, there’s no reason you need to shiver through the winter. The main goal of insulating your home in Southwestern Ontario is to reduce heating costs significantly keeping your family comfortable all year long.
