Preparing Your Attic for Your Insulation Installation in West Lorne, ON

If you are getting ready for an upcoming insulation installation in West Lorne, ON, you will have some work to do to make sure your attic is ready. Here is a list of a few steps you need to have completed in your attic before installation day:

  • Electrical wiring: Before your contractor begins installation, your electrical wiring will need to be up to code. In addition, make sure that none of the wiring is exposed so as not to present a dangerous fire hazard. At this time, also check the condition of your light fixtures, and make sure that there is a gap of at least three inches between any lighting and intended installation areas. Also make sure that these fixtures are shielded or covered to further reduce the fire hazard, which can be done with hardware cloth or plywood scraps.
  • Clearing out the work area: Because the technicians who complete your installation will need unobstructed access to the walls and floors in your attic, everything will have to be cleared out before work can begin. Since most attics typically become makeshift storage units over time, it is likely that this will take some effort. Give yourself plenty of time before installation to clear out the work area and find a temporary space for all of the things that call your attic home. Clearing out the area is also helpful because there will likely be debris dispersed as a result of the insulation install. Removing furniture and other valuable items ensures that they will not be damaged or covered in debris, which could create problems in the future for those in the home who might have allergies.
  • Patch up air holes and leaks: Before the insulation is installed in your attic, you will need to search for any air holes that may exist so that you can patch them up before the project gets underway. Regardless of how efficient the insulation will make your home, with air seeping into and out of your home, the overall efficiency will still take a hit, and you might not see the energy savings that you were expecting. You can take care of the small cracks yourself by filling them with caulk, or you can use expanding spray foam for the larger air holes. In addition to these air holes, it will also be important to identify any water leaks, because these too can have damaging effects. If water is leaking onto the wooden surfaces in your attic, it can lead to mold, rot and an overall dampness in your entire attic that can negate the effectiveness of the insulation.

This is just a short list of things that need to be done before the contractors get to your home.
